The best Time to visit is in October for the Maskara Festival. During the rest of the year, this city is a magnet for people looking for great food and great hospitality. A tour of Bacolod’s attractions starts at the city plaza, where you’ll find San Sebastian Cathedral(built in 1876), Its coral stone is from Guimaras and its hardwood is from Palawan.The historical building of Palacio Episcopal (Bishop’s Palace), built In 1890, served as a refuge for the Spanish colonizers during the revolt of 1898. The Fountain of Justice in front of the old city hall is where the Spanish colonizers surrendered to Filipinos in 1898. The stunning Diocesan Shrine of st. Thaddeus is known for its “floating” Risen Christ at the altar, and its painted ceiling. The Sta. Clara Chapel may seem modest, but it has a mosaic mural made from mother of pearl and 95,000 pieces of shells. The San Antonio Abad Church looks like a crown, and is notable for its altar made by National Artist Solomon Saprid. Wander around the man-made Capitol Park and Lagoon in front of the Negros Occidental Provincial Capitol Building.For a primer on Negrense culture and heritage, visit the Negros Museum. You’ll see exhibits of the rich history of Bacolod. The central exhibits of the museum are a massive replica of an Iron Dinosaur steam engine, and a 40-foot traditional boat called batil.Other interesting exhibits are the gallery of folk art and toys from all over the world, and artwork by Bacolod artists depicting life during the pre- Spanish era and the sugar boom. Another must-visit is the Dizon Ramon Museum, which houses an extensive collection of glassware, ceramics, memorabilia and religious icons. Bacolod City also has its share of ancestral homes.
